Innovation Processes in Medical Schools

Innovation Processes in Medical Schools

$92.98

Innovation Processes in Medical Education is the first empirical study to investigate the barriers to successful educational change. Using a qualitative case study approach, it examines the factors that have either supported or impeded change in four medical schools: Case Western Reserve, University of Illinois, McMaster University, and Michigan State University. Following an overview of the historical forces that led to the current structure of the medical school curriculum; the authors discuss their research methodology and data, and analyze their attempts at innovation in each of the four cases, examining the relative merits of each effort. A matrix is developed that will help medical school innovators establish implementation strategies by showing them how to arrive at optimal strategies based on the specific context in which they work.

Introduction to Medical Ethics

Introduction to Medical Ethics

$34.98

Throughout history, men have repeatedly made judgments regarding their own conduct and that of their fellow men. Some acts have been judged to be right or good, while other acts have been denounced as wrong or evil. Ethical judgment in medicine, as in other areas of life, is an attempt to distinguish between good and bad conduct. This book is based on three lectures given by the author as the Medical Director of Eye Clinic Singapura International. The first lecture was an address delivered to medical undergraduates at the National University of Singapore in 1975. The second was a Commonwealth Medical Association lecture delivered a decade ago. The third was a Singapore Medical Association lecture delivered in 1981. This volume, emphasizing the principles of medical ethics, has been kept simple and brief, and it is hoped that it will make interesting reading for both medical professionals and the general public.

A History of Flint Medical College, 1889-1911

A History of Flint Medical College, 1889-1911

$12.98

After the Civil War, black people in the New Orleans region did not have adequate medical care, causing a health care crisis which lasted for almost two decades. In 1889 an institution emerged in response to this emergency. New Orleans University, a Methodist Episcopal Church school, opened a medical department which would later become Flint Medical College. Flint was born of the missionary fervor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Although constantly facing the obstacle of chronic financial difficulty, the medical school grew, and in 1901, to honor its benefactor businessman John D. Flint, the university changed the name of the school to Flint Medical College. In spite of positive development, by 1905 advances in medical knowledge and practices threatened the adequacy of Flint?s program. By 1906, Flint was struggling academically and needed better clinical facilities. Finally, faced with challenges it was unable to meet, in August 1911, the university announced the closing of Flint Medical College. Divers elements combined to end Flint?s existence in 1911, but it was not a failure. This institution provided the foundation for organized health care for black people in the New Orleans area, and signified a triumph of black self-determination underwritten by Christian missionary fervor.

Curriculum Development for Medical Education

Curriculum Development for Medical Education

$35.98

At a time when society is demanding accountability from the medical education system and residency review committees are demanding written curricula, this book offers a practical, yet theoretically sound, approach to curriculum development in medicine. The approach described in Curriculum Development for Medical Education has evolved over the past ten years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development and evaluation skills to faculty and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described here to develop curricula on topics as diverse as advance directives, office gynecology for the generalist, a renal elective for internal medicine residents, and an office-based preceptorship for first-year medical students.Short, practical, and generic in its approach, the book begins with an overview of a six-step approach to curriculum development. Each succeeding chapter then covers one of the six steps: problem identification; targeted needs assessment; goals and objectives; education methods; implementation; and evaluation. Additional chapters address curriculum maintenance, enhancement, and dissemination. Throughout, examples are used to illustrate major points. An appendix provides the reader with a selected list of published and unpublished resources on funding, faculty development, and already developed curricula. Curriculum Development for Medical Education is designed for use by program directors and others who are responsible for the educational experiences of medical students, residents, fellows, and clinical practitioners.

The Secrets of Medical Decision Making

The Secrets of Medical Decision Making

$15.48

We are all patients at some time. Is the medical industry giving us the best treatment possible, at the best price? We all know that it isn’t. My book, The Secrets of Medical Decision Making: How to avoid becoming a victim of the Health Care Machine, shows what goes on behind the scenes of the current medical care and how it impacts the patient. I describe actual cases from my clinical practice showing the most common paths that lead to increased patient suffering. I then offer possible solutions. My book covers all the health care settings a reader may encounter: outpatient (the most common type of health care setting encountered by patients), the inpatient (hospital), preventive (patients who are not sick but seek preventive services), and end-of-life care setting. The latter may be especially pertinent in the view of the recent public tragedy of the Terri Schiavo case. Personal stories of the patients that I encountered make this reading easy to relate to. The experiences of patients are used as starting points to show how doctor’s decisions are affected by a variety of non-medical considerations. I introduce a concept of a Medical Box—forces that have a stronger hold on most physicians than the heavy chains of prison shackles. Here are, what I call, the four corners of the Medical Box: Fear of litigation. Financial and time pressure. Guidelines of Health Care authorities. The current Medical Model—disease oriented thinking. The text illustrates how each of these is played out in everyday patient care. A number of practical recommendations are offered. The most important theme, overarching the entire book, is empowering prospective patients to use their own common sense and trust their own judgment in making medical decisions about their medical care. A foreword to the book is written by Colin P. Kopes-Kerr, MD, JD, MPH, who is a Vice Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine, and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, at University Hospital and SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, Stony Brook, NY.

Reforming Medical Education (Hardcover)

Reforming Medical Education (Hardcover)

The University of Illinois College of Medicine has its origins in the 1882 opening of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago. In 1897 the College of Physicians and Surgeons became affiliated with the University of Illinois and began a relationship that endured its fair share of trials, successes, and even a few bitter fights. In this fact-filled volume, Winton U. Solberg places the early history of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in a national and international context, tracing its origins, crises, and reforms through its first tumultuous decades.Solberg discusses the role of the College of Medicine and the city of Chicago in the historic transformation from the late nineteenth century, when Germany was the acknowledged world center of medicine and the germ theory of disease was not yet widely accepted, to 1920, by which time the United States had emerged as the leader in modern medical research and education. With meticulous scholarship and attention to detail, this volume chronicles the long and difficult struggle to achieve that goal.

Medical Malpractice and the American Jury

Medical Malpractice and the American Jury

$10.48

In this landmark book, Neil Vidmar looks beyond the common perceptions of medical malpractice litigation and finds a system that is fair, impartial, and intelligent. Firmly grounded in a wealth of empirical data, the author presents a fresh look at a civil jury system that has been maligned as out-of-touch, capricious, and disposed to awarding exorbitant, unjustified amounts to plaintiffs whenever they have the opportunity. In an era when tort reform is high on the congressional agenda, Medical Malpractice and the American Jury is almost alone in voicing reason and fact. Written in a thoroughly inviting, jargon-free style, Medical Malpractice and the American Jury places those cases that go to trial in the broader context of litigation, noting that only about ten percent of malpractice cases ever result in trials. Of those that do go to trial, the author notes, more than two out of three cases are decided in the doctor’s favor–repudiating the view that jurors are inherently biased against doctors and are motivated more by sympathy for the plaintiff than by the facts of the case. Neil Vidmar comprehensively addresses all the claims that have been leveled against the performance of malpractice juries. For example, he compares actual jury decisions on negligence with neutral physicians’ ratings of whether negligence occurred in the medical treatment and finds a remarkable consistency–repudiating the view that jurors are unable to understand experts or uncritically defer to their opinion. "Medical Malpractice and the American Jury is quite simply the most compelling, comprehensive examination of the American jury system yet written. It brings reason and fact to the debate in a way that puts the lie to the many myths surrounding medical negligence cases. For anyone genuinely interested in just solutions, this book should be required reading. To act in ignorance of its findings invites disaster." –Trial "For anyone really interested in the evidence about the daily grind of the courthouse mill, Neil Vidmar’s Medical Malpractice and the American Jury is a good place to start." –Washington Post Book World Neil Vidmar is Professor of Social Science and Law, Duke Law School, and Professor of Psychology, Duke University.

Medical Culture in Revolutionary America (Hardcover)

Medical Culture in Revolutionary America (Hardcover)

$46.85

Myrsiades (English, West Chester University) takes a look at the practice of medicine in eighteenth century America not from the perspective of medical research and practice, but from the social behavior of the practitioners. She studies the manner in which medicine was struggling for legitimacy as part of the process of moving from individual doctors who based their reputations on a code of honor and reputation to a systematized profession regulated by legal and educational standards. To set the stage, Myrsiades details the problems of quacks calling themselves physicians on one side and, on the other, the resistance of the public to the study of cadavers that would allow for more knowledgeable physicians. She then gives case studies of three doctors and their feuds. The best known of these was Benjamin Rush, a member of the Continental Congress. The others were William Shippen and John Morgan. The feuds, based on personal and professional antipathy, influenced the care of soldiers during the Revolution and the founding of medical schools. This is a microcosmic example of a society and a profession in transition that will interest both medical and social historians. Distributed by Associated University Presses. Measuring Professionalism in Second Year Medical Students

Measuring Professionalism in Second Year Medical Students

$65.98

Managed care and the corporatization of health care in the United States present challenges to medical professionalism. The defining, promoting, and teaching of medical professionalism have therefore become major concerns for medical educators. Consequently, the need for a systematic assessment of professionalism has become apparent. In 2002, the Medical Student Performance Evaluation Committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges developed and published a Draft Professionalism Assessment Form. The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California pilot tested this instrument during the fall and spring semesters of 2005-2006. The purpose of this study was to begin the process of validating this instrument by determining inter-rater reliability. Within the section titled Review of Literature, the work relates five professional development theories to currently employed methods of assessment. This innovative classification system contributes to our understanding of professional development and evaluation instruments.

The Natural Fit Wheelchair Handrim is a state of the art engineered handrim providing comfort and enables better wheelchair movement and braking. Natural-Fit Wheelchair Handrim Features: Provides ergonomic surfaces for the thumb and for the palm of the hand Creates a vastly improved contact area for gripping the handrim Offers specially coated high and low friction surfaces for propulsion and braking Maximizes the efficiency of propulsion and braking No gap between the rim and wheel Prevents fingers and thumb from getting caught between the rim and wheel Eases stress on the shoulder and wrist Reduces pain and injury as a result of daily propulsion Lightweight durable aluminum Adds less weight or width relative to standard handrims Attaches to the wheel of a variety of wheelchairs Affords easy replacement of your existing handrims Research of the Natural-Fit Wheelchair Handrim In this research, individuals used an earlier prototype of the Natural-Fit on their wheelchair for a two-week trial period. After this trial period, these individuals were asked to propel their wheelchair on a roller system that allows for the analysis of how they are propelling their chair — or what is known as propulsion biomechanics. They propel their chair on the roller system twice, once while using their standard handrims, and once while using the Natural-Fit. This allows researchers to directly compare wheelchair propulsion for the two different handrims. The results showed that, after the two-week trial use period, wheelchair users demonstrated more efficient wheelchair propulsion with the Natural-Fit than with their standard handrim More efficient propulsion, or covering the same distance with less effort, helps to reduce the stress and strain on the arms as an individual propels his or her chair. This research was conducted by Dr. Michael L. Boninger and Dr. Rory A. Cooper, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Repetitive Stress Injuries Research has linked the stress and strain that wheelchair propulsion exerts on the arms to the development of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and wrist pain. For instance, research has shown that damage to the median nerve, a cause of CTS, has been associated with high-force, high-repetition tasks commonly experienced during manual wheelchair propulsion. In one study conducted over a multi-year period, the way an individual propelled their wheelchair predicted the onset of CTS years later. The way an individual propels their wheelchair has also been linked to the development of repetitive stress inj

The medical history and physical examination are the most important cornerstones of clinical diagnosis, but there has been no single book devoted to a description of methods applicable to companion animals. This book is intended to fulfil the need. It describes the methods used in the veterinary schools of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and the University of Ghent in Belgium. The effectiveness of these methods is recognized by many visiting staff members and students from other veterinary schools in Europe and North America. Central to this book is the concept that the examination should be as efficient as possible. To achieve this purpose, a short initial examination is used to define the problems presented by the owner. The clinician is then guided in making choices, which focuses the attention on the essential problems and makes more of the examination time available for problem solving. The methods of examination, which are described system by system, are based on this selective approach. Many of the chapters close with a medical history form, which facilitates rapid orientation to the medical problem, and throughout the book photographs and original drawings illustrate both concepts and methods.

An Insider’s Guide to Getting into Medical School

$20.48

This is an excellent new reference for anyone who wishes to go into the medical field. You will be guided through the application process starting in undergraduate level or before, to increase the chance of the successful outcome of being accepted to medical school. If you are a nontraditional and/or minority applicant you will benefit from chapters devoted strictly to your situation and how you might maximize your chance of being accepted. Its discussion of the Americans with Disabilities act and how it affects admission and how to deal with questions about your disability will be of value to you if you are disabled. You will benefit from the section entitled "An Insider’s View of the Admission Selection Process", written from the perspective of admissions committees, admissions officers, and interviewers. This section will give you a basic sense of what these professionals look for when screening and accepting or rejecting applicants. You will start with a general overview of the selection process, and then proceed to critical undergraduate courses, categories of volunteer work considered helpful, and how to prepare for the MCAT examination. You will then be advised on the typical admission requirements and application and submission processes common to most medical schools, selection of schools for application, and pros and cons of transfer and early decision programs. You are also provided with extensive information on obtaining quality letters of recommendation and writing an excellent personal statement, both important parts of the process. You are also advised on the interview process, including what might be expected during the interview, appropriate sample questions and answers for student and interviewer, dress, and behavior. This chapter also covers inappropriate, unethical, or illegal questions or requests and how to answer and handle them. You will also learn about the fifteen common errors made by medical school applicants, and are given samples of necessary documents such as letters of recommendation. It is hoped that the information in this book will help you attain a successful result, but if you are rejected you are given guidance in this area as well. You are given suggestions on topics such as re-evaluating career goals, evaluating your application process, ways to improve you application, other health care professions as potential careers, and applying to foreign medical schools. This book is an important, useful and beneficial reference for you at all levels of your education, your family and friends, and others involved in this process such as high school, junior college and university professors, instructors and academic advisors working with pre-med and science majors and other potential medical students, other career councelors and coaches in both the public and private sectors, medical practitioners and researchers working with potential medical students. It is also valuable for school and pu…

"Brief and synthetic as the essays are, they will . . . be of most use to students or to those new to the field. However, they provide engaging reading for those with more in-depth knowledge too." · Journal of Modern History "Educators and students owe a debt of gratitude . . . all of the articles in this anthology are readily accessible to the non-specialist without compromising the cutting-edge scholarship that informs them." · ISIS "This in an engrossing book . . . morally challenging to all physicians." · Journal of the American Medical Association ". . . extraordinarily valuable essays combine perspectives from history, sociology, demography, and anthropology." · Choice ". . . excellent orientation for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as physicians and the general public . . . All in all, this is a stimulating set of essays that deserves a wide readership." · H-German The participation of German physicians in medical experiments on innocent people and mass murder is one of the most disturbing aspects of the Nazi era and the Holocaust. Six distinguished historians working in this field are addressing the critical issues raised by these murderous experiments, such as the place of the Holocaust in the larger context of eugenic and racial research, the motivation and roles of the German medical establishment, and the impact and legacy of the eugenics movements and Nazi medical practice on physicians and medicine since World War II. Francis R. Nicosia is professor of History at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont where he teaches courses on modern German and European history and the Holocaust. Curriculum Development for Medical Education (Paperback)

Curriculum Development for Medical Education (Paperback)

$41

Curriculum Development for Medical Education is designed for use by curriculum developers and others who are responsible for the educational experiences of medical students, residents, fellows, and clinical practitioners.Short, practical, and general in its approach, the book begins with a broad overview of the subject. Each succeeding chapter covers one of the six steps: problem identification and general needs assessment, targeted needs assessment, goals and objectives, educational strategies, implementation, and evaluation. Additional chapters address curriculum maintenance, enhancement, and dissemination. The six-step approach outlined here has evolved over the past twenty years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development and evaluation skills to faculty and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described to develop curricula on such diverse topics as preclerkship skills building, clinical reasoning and shared decision making, outpatient internal medicine, musculoskeletal disorders, office gynecology for the generalist, chronic illness and disability, geriatrics for nongeriatric faculty, surgical skills assessment, laparoscopic surgical skills, cross-cultural competence, and medical ethics. This thoroughly revised edition includes a broad discussion of competencies mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and other bodies, current information on education technology, increased emphasis on scholarships related to curriculum development, and advice on obtaining institutional review board approval. Updated examples throughout the book illustrate major points. The expanded appendixes include samples of complete curricula and information on funding, faculty development, and curricular resources.Praise for the first edition"This excellent educational guide is a concrete step-by-step

The University of Illinois was founded in 1867 and expanded into Chicago in the 1890s. Through time, demands for the growth of the urban campus were answered. Under the leadership of Mayor Richard J.Daley, the Circle Campus was created and located in 1965 on the Near West Side of Chicago in the historic Hull-House neighborhood. In 1982, Circle Campus joined with the Medical Center to form the University of Illinois at Chicago. With outreach programs coordinated in the Great Cities Initiative, the University recognized its urban location as a major strength. Over the last decade, UIC has helped to develop a new model of higher education: the comprehensive urban research university. This volume contains almost two hundred historic photographs thatserve as a rich record of the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois. Today, with 15 colleges located in a prominent urban setting, the campus is the largest and most diverse in the Chicago area, serving students from around the world. The University of Illinois at Chicago has grown to about 25,000 students, with 12,000 faculty and staff, and is one of the hundred largest research universities in the nation. It offers bachelor?s, master?s, and doctoral degrees in more than 230 disciplines.
