Sealed Proactive
Have you ever heard of the saying, "A person trash is another person treasure?" Well, that statement is a real one, but never more than in the realm of media relations where so many small businesses find it so difficult to garner media attention for themselves or their companies. Let me illustrate my point below in an actual incident that happened one of my clients and the lessons we learned from this experience.
One day a new client approached me about getting media attention for its business. She had tried writing and submitting press releases on its own, but with luck and decided it was time for a media relations company to contact. We made an appointment to meet and we discussed her business and brainstormed about ways to ensure coverage in a creative and affordable way. During that meeting and other subsequent ones, I was very familiar with her business and learned why she was so successful. But it was a casual conversation, with little to do with her company had, I learned the information enable secure messaging me for my new client.
This particular client is an art designer and runs a very successful company in the Midwest, but her one true passion since childhood gymnastics. She took part in the sport as a child. They still follow the sport on television and even integrates the sport in the name of her company. I learned that they would have people take pictures of her performing handstands in the vicinity of historic structures and that they had done throughout the country.
It was through that conversation I learned that she even had a picture taken of her performing a handstand just outside of the World Trade Center several years ago. I asked her why she had not such information shared with me earlier and said: "It was such a little thing that I really do not think it is very important. "
In reality, there was little known fact that closed the deal for the local newspaper coverage. When I talked to the reporter, I was able to strategically this "small" be added to the reporter and explain that I could provide the real picture. The less important to the reporter that this customer was a self-published author and ran a successful company. While all that information was great, it was the World Trade Center photograph the importance of the reporter peaked. At the end, instead of receiving a small blurb in the newspaper, that was what We actually expect that they in turn had a front-page story complete with her photo and references to both her business and her love for gymnastics. Plus, this was a very affordable decision because the client never could have afforded an ad the size of that article generated.
The point I am trying to make is this. Sometimes small businesses should depend on the services of communications companies to secure media. But whether you are dealing with a large agency or a boutique agency or a freelancer, is always important to share any detail, because sometimes it's the little details that can make or break a story.
