Take This Ride $7.98 After their second (third?) long retirement, Moving Targets have reunited again with predictably great results. This is now their fourth raging guitar, heavy bass-and-drums, high-and-dry battering album, notable for Kenny Chambers’ sense of sterling choruses and stellar verses to match that malicious edge his buzzing guitar has had since 1987’s crushing Burning in Water. Not that Chambers and mates (bassist Pat Leonard and drummer J. Arcari) haven’t progressed. In many ways, Take This Ride is their most interesting LP (if not their most aurally thrilling), precisely because of the more restrained tempos, giving the band more room to groove and Chambers more time to rip off steely leads for this harsh post-punk/post-hardcore roaring rock. Songs such as “Unwind” and “Right Way” find Chambers caressing his strings in a way he might not have considered in the Bands That Could Be God (compilation) era, with no diminishing of chops or drama. As they continue to improve, MTs’ only crime is that in the wake of Seattle, there are too many lesser lights crowding this field, meaning this comet might slip through the horizon of oblivion. Every time I’ve seen ‘em play they’ve been ignored (hot dog vendors have bigger draws), and that’s just overtly unfair. As an on-again, off-again proposition, they don’t help their own cause much; still, if better supported, maybe the obviously talented Chambers (who in the past has wasted his off-time as second banana with such metallic lemons as Bullet la Volta) would be tempted to stay the course. Deft, melodic aural attacks like this are not that common anymore! Shelley informs us, in her note on the Prometheus Unbound, that at the time of her husband’s arrival in Italy, he meditated the production of three dramas.2 One of these was the Prdmet/ieug itself; the second, a drama on the subject of Tasso’s madness; the third one founded on the Book of Job; of which, she adds, he never abandoned the idea. That this was the case will be apparent from the following newly-discovered fragment, which may have been, as I have on the whole preferred to describe it, an unfinished prologue to Hellas, or perhaps the original sketch of that work, discarded for the existing more dramatic, but less ambitious version, for which the Persae of Eschylus evidently supplied the model. It is written in the same book as the original MS. of Hellas, and so blended with this as to be only separable after very minute examination. Few even of Shelley’s rough drafts have proved more difficult to decipher or connect; numerous chasms will be observed, which, with every diligence, it has proved impossible to fill upj the correct reading of many printed lines is far from certain; and the imperfection of some passages is such as to have occasioned their entire omission. Nevertheless, I am confident that the unpolished and mutilated remnant will be accepted as a worthy emanation of one of Shelley’s sublimesfc moods, and a noble earnest of what he might have accomplished could he have executed his original design of founding a drama on the Book of Job. Weak health, variable spirits, above all, the absence of encouragement, must be enumerated as chief among the causes which have deprived our literature of so magnificent a work. IPublislietl here by permission of the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.] The polecats now referred to Miistela (PidOTTMs) lureata are divisible into at least three well marked forms, which, in the ahsence of intermediate specimens, may be called species. The great variations in color exhibited by the series in the United States National Museum prove to be geographic, not individual, and in the two cases where there are three skins from one locality the specimens are remarkably uniform in color and markings. The animal is rare in collections and, unfortunately, we have no specimen from the type locality of larvata, southwestern Tibet, near the border of Nepal. The good description of the original specimen of that form, supplemented by the remarks on an additional example by Horsfield (Cat. Mamm. Mus. East India Co., pp. 105-106) shows it to be of a decidedly different color from either of the new forms described in this paper. Mr. Thomas has recently expressed the opinion that Kastschenko’s Putorius eversmanni michnoi is a form of larvata rather than of eversmanni (Ann. and Mag. Nat. Hist., IX, p. 393, April, 1912). From a study of the description, with specimens from various localities before me, I find it agrees better with a Siberian specimen of eversmanni than with any specimen of the larvata group in the National Museum. Some specimens of the two animals are, however, superficially much alike, and mutilated trappers’ skins without skulls might readily be confused. Only a direct comparison can settle the Ann. Mns.
