Daily Ritual

Is there something from the tradition that massage therapy can help parents with sleeping babies' solutions?
Yes, absolutely. There is something really, really helps both parents to relax and babies to relax and actually baby massage, and a daily practice or begin a daily ritual with baby. This is something that is actually practiced in India for a very, very long time. After a daily ritual with baby massage has a great advantage for improving the sleeping babies and the ability of babies to get to sleep.
But beyond that is beneficial to skin contact or stimulation for a very different reason. It is great for baby's circulation, digestion, muscle motion and development, and better sleep, of course – not to mention offering your child an early relationship with stress management, not a bad instrument to pass to your children, given the increasing pressures and stresses that we live with on a daily basis these days. It also builds a relationship healthy and loving touch, so the baby's already aware of a healthy and loving touch even before proceeding to the childhood and adulthood. It is really amazing, and it is something that happens in many other cultures. It is new kind of feeling one way or another to us here in North America, but many parents do not realize that they actually do on a regular basis.
I always like to say the touch already going on between parents and their babies is okay, and learn how your child do with a massage class or a workshop or a book is just the extension of the real good skills and touch that already exist. So I want parents to know that what you all are doing is good.
When some parents say, 'Oh, I want my Baby hurt, "you have a way to relieve the minds of parents that you're not going to hurt them if they hit you in a loving way? As I am not asking parents, "You have to baby massage and the proper pressure or else you will hurt them."
Just a little bit to work on perhaps the amount of pressure or the amount kind of trigger point therapy you would do with a baby? Parents are often a bit trepid to give their baby a massage as they might have received. So really, I sometimes say even experiment on your arms or legs, or your jaw or your neck a bit, experimenting with different kind of pressure to see how it feels. You want to make sure that you really do not feather light touch, as feather light touch on a tickly and may eventually be over-stimulating for baby. And then you do not want kind of a really deep or become aggressive because it can be uncomfortable. Many of the baby time you feedback also.
It's not verbal communication, but you can often tell when babies are not happy spin and the massage they receive. So should you signals from the baby listening too. But ultimately, the best thing to do is just to be safe than sorry, especially in the abdominal area is not working too deep, but you definitely want to turn for the fabric. You want not just sort of feather-light touch and kind of rubbing the skin. You want the tissue and muscles are involved, but erring on the side of caution are soft and is probably better.
And I really recommend it to parents who want to do baby massage on a regular basis, if they want to make it a ritual, if not already have actually received massage, and some professional massage therapy. Because that give you an idea of how it feels to actually receive different types of pressure and different techniques. And you can also ideas for how to work with your baby.

Ritual $27.98 From handshakes and toasts to chant and genuflection, ritual pervades our social interactions and religious practices. Still, few of us could identify all of our daily and festal ritual behaviors, much less explain them to an outsider. Similarly, because of the variety of activities that qualify as ritual and their many contradictory yet, in many ways, equally legitimate interpretations, ritual seems to elude any systematic historical and comparative scrutiny. In this book, Catherine Bell offers a practical introduction to ritual practice and its study; she surveys the most influential theories of religion and ritual, the major categories of ritual activity, and the key debates that have shaped our understanding of ritualism. Bell refuses to nail down ritual with any one definition or understanding. Instead, her purpose is to reveal how definitions emerge and evolve and to help us become more familiar with the interplay of tradition, exigency, and self-expression that goes into constructing this complex social medium. |

Learning Ritual Magic $15.98 Learning Ritual Magic is a training manual for anyone serious about improving their magic based on the western mystery traditions, including tarot, ritual magic, Qabalah, and astrology. "What you get out of [magic] can be measured precisely by what you are willing to put into it?and time is the essential ingredient in successful magical training," the authors write. And just as no one expects to run a marathon or play a Bach violin concerto without sufficient training, so practitioners of the magical arts shouldn?t expect to work complex, powerful magical rituals without a solid grounding in the techniques of Hermetic high magic. By spending at least a half hour a day practicing the lessons found in Learning Ritual Magic, the solitary apprentice attains the proper groundwork and experience for working ritual magic. Learning Ritual Magic provides lessons on meditation and a set of exercises designed to develop basic skills in imagination, will, memory, and self-knowledge, all of which are absolute fundamentals to magical attainment. While the authors discuss the essentials of magical theory, they focus on daily, basic perspectives rather than launching into details of advanced practice. Designed for the solitary practitioner, Learning Ritual Magic concludes with a ceremony of self-initiation. |

Ritual Medical Lore of Sephardic Women $39.48 Ritual Medical Lore of Sephardic Women preserves the precious remnants of a rich culture on the verge of extinction while affirming women’s pivotal role in the health of their communities. Centered around extensive interviews with elders of the Sephardic communities of the former Ottoman Empire, this volume illuminates a fascinating complex of preventive and curative rituals conducted by women at home–rituals that ensured the physical and spiritual well-being of the community and functioned as a vital counterpart to the public rites conducted by men in the synagogues. Isaac Jack LŽvy and Rosemary LŽvy Zumwalt take us into the homes and families of Sephardim in Turkey, Israel, Greece, the former Yugoslavia, and the United States to unravel the ancient practices of domestic healing: the network of blessings and curses tailored to every occasion of daily life; the beliefs and customs surrounding mal ojo (evil eye), espanto (fright), and echizo (witchcraft); and cures involving everything from herbs, oil, and sugar to the powerful mumia (mummy) made from dried bones of corpses. For the Sephardim, curing an illness required discovering its spiritual cause, which might be unintentional thought or speech, accident, or magical incantation. The healing rituals of domesticated medicine provided a way of making sense of illness and a way of shaping behavior to fit the narrow constraints of a tightly structured community. Tapping a rich and irreplaceable vein of oral testimony, Ritual Medical Lore of Sephardic Women offers fascinating insight into a culture where profound spirituality permeated every aspect of daily life. Isaac Jack LŽvy, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Spanish Language and Literature at the University of South Carolina and founder of the American Society of Sephardic Studies, is the author of And the World Stood Silent: Sephardic Poetry of the Holocaust and Prolegomena to the Study of the "Refranero Sefardi." |

Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice $34.48 Arguing that the concept of ritual is overdue for critical rethinking, Bell here offers a close theoretical analysis of recent developments in ritual studies, concentrating on anthropology, sociology, and history of religions. She begins by showing how discourse on ritual has served to generate and legitimate a limited and ultimately closed form of cultural analysis. She then proposes that so-called ritual activities be removed from their isolated position as special, paradigmatic acts and restored to the context of "social activity" in general. Using the term "ritualization" to describe ritual thus contextualized, she defines it as a culturally strategic way of acting. She goes on to show how this definition can serve to illuminate such classic issues in traditional ritual studies as belief, ideology, legitimation, and power. |
|
|
Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice (Paperback) $24.7 Ritual studies today figures as a central element of religious discourse for many scholars around the world. Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice, Catherine Bell`s sweeping and seminal work on the subject, helped legitimize the field. In this volume, Bell re-examines the issues, methods, and ramifications of our interest in ritual by concentrating on anthropology, sociology, and the history of religions. Now with a new foreword by Diane Jonte-Pace, Bell`s work is a must-read for understanding the evolution of the field of ritual studies and its current state. |

The Reformation of Ritual $121.98 The Reformation of Ritual explores the function of ritual in early modern German society, and the extent to which it was modified by the Reformation. Employing anthropological insights and drawing on extensive archival research, Susan Karant-Nunn outlines the significance of the ceremonial changes. This comprehensive study includes an examination of all major rites of passage: birth, baptism, confirmation, engagement, marriage, penance, the Eucharist and dying. The author argues that the changes in ritual made over the course of the century reflect more than theological shifts; ritual was a means of imposing discipline and of making the divine more or less accessible. This study provides insight into the politics of reforming religion and into the practices of the wider congregation in early modern Germany. |

The Ritual Process $23.98 The Ritual Process has acquired the status of a small classic since these lectures were first published in 1969. Turner demonstrates in these pages how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. The Future Of Ritual $46.98 How is performance used in politics, medicine, religion, popular entertainment and individual interactions? In The Future of Ritual, Richard Schechner explores the nature of ritualized behavior and its relationship to performance and politics. Schechner studies the interactions, sometimes easy, sometimes tense, among authors, directors, performers, and spectators. A brilliant examination of cultural expression and communal action, The Future of Ritual, available now in paperback, asks pertinent questions about art, theatre and the changing meaning of "culture" in today’s intercultural world. |

Zen Ritual $28.98 When books about Zen Buddhism began appearing in Western languages just over a half-century ago, there was no interest whatsoever in the role of ritual in Zen. Indeed, what attracted Western readers’ interest was the Zen rejection of ritual. The famous ‘Beat Zen’ writers were delighted by the Zen emphasis on spontaneity as opposed to planned, repetitious action, and wrote inspirationally about the demythologized, anti-ritualized spirit of Zen. Quotes from the great Zen masters supported this understanding of Zen, and led to the fervor that fueled the opening of Zen centers throughout the West. Once Western practitioners in these centers began to practice Zen seriously, however, they discovered that zazen – Zen meditation – is a ritualized practice supported by centuries-old ritual practices of East Asia. Although initially in tension with the popular anti-ritual image of ancient Zen masters, interest in Zen ritual has increased along with awareness of its fundamental role in the spirit of Zen. Eventually, Zen practitioners would form the idea of no-mind, or the open and awakened state of mind in which ingrained habits of thinking give way to more receptive, direct forms of experience. This notion provides a perspective from which ritual could gain enormous respect as a vehicle to spiritual awakening, and thus this volume seeks to emphasize the significance of ritual in Zen practice. Containing 9 articles by prominent scholars on a variety of topics, including the Zen rituals kinhin and zazen, this volume covers from the early Chan period to modern Japan. Each chapter deals with key developments in the Linji/Rinzai and Caodon/ Soto schools of China and Japan, describing how Zen rituals mold the lives and characters of its practitioners and shape them in accordance with the ideal of Zen awakening. This volume is a significant step toward placing these practices in a larger historical and analytical perspective. |

Reciprocity and Ritual $123.98 BL The first attempt to understand the development of early Greek literature from the perspective of state-formation This is an exciting and entirely new synthesis, combining anthropology, political and social history, and the close reading of central Greek texts, to account for two the most significant hallmarks in Homeric epic and Athenian tragedy: the representation of ritual and codes of reciprocity. |

Ritual Ground $5.48 From about 1830 to 1849, Bent’s Old Fort, located in present-day Colorado on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail, was the largest trading post in the Southwest and the mountain-plains region. Although the raw enterprise and improvisation that characterized the American westward movement seem to have little to do with ritual, Douglas Comer argues that the fort grew and prospered because of ritual and that ritual shaped the subsequent history of the region to an astonishing extent. At Bent’s Old Fort, rituals of trade, feasting, gaming, marriage, secret societies, and war, as well as the "calcified ritual" provided by the fort itself, brought together and restructured Anglo, Hispanic, and American Indian cultures. Comer sheds new light on this heretofore poorly understood period in American history, building at the same time a powerfully convincing case to demonstrate that the human world is made through ritual.Comer gives his narrative an anthropological and philosophical framework; the events at Bent’s Old Fort provide a compelling example not only of "world formation" but of a world’s tragic collapse, culminating in the Sand Creek massacre. He also calls attention to the reconstructed Bent’s Old Fort on the site of the original. Here visitors reenact history, staff work out personal identities, and groups lobby for special versions of history by ritual recasting of the past as the present. |

Ritual and Memory $39.48 Ethnographers of religion have created a vast record of religious behavior from small-scale non-literate societies to globally distributed religions in urban settings. So a theory that claims to explain prominent features of ritual, myth, and belief in all contexts everywhere causes ethnographers a skeptical pause. In Ritual and Memory, however, a wide range of ethnographers grapple critically with Harvey Whitehouse’s theory of two divergent modes of religiosity. Although these contributors differ in their methods, their areas of fieldwork, and their predisposition towards Whitehouse’s cognitively-based approach, they all help evaluate and refine Whitehouse’s theory and so contribute to a new comparative approach in the anthropology of religion. Ritual and Cognition $36.27 Part of the Ritual Studies Monograph Series, this book examines longstanding debates in the anthropology of religion concerning the connections between ritual and meaning, belief, politics, emotion, development, and gender. But it examines these `old` topics from a radically new perspective: that of the cognitive science of religion. As such the volume identifies potential solutions to established problems but it also sets out a program for future research in the field. The volume includes a substantial introduction from Harvey Whitehouse and James Laidlaw who highlight the connections between key issues in the history of religious anthropology and the latest findings of scientific psychology. This volume, they argue, presents us with potential solutions to old problems but also with a series of new and exciting challenges. |

Spirit-Ritual $14.98 According to Dr. Hilliard, the greatest need facing humankind today is an activated consciousness of the spirit?-?an awaking of the inner-spirit and soul. Spirit-Ritual: Exploring Spirituality, Beyond the Sacred Veil, utilizes a variety of sacred rituals intended to guide the reader on a journey into the spiritual realm, a journey that all of us inwardly wish to take, though few gain the insight to lead them beyond the sacred veil. Hilliard challenges his readers to think through the assortment of eastern and western spiritual movements, which often bring about pseudo-spirituality, in order to find a personal connection with their true spiritual self. His extensive research into the spirit and soul, his years as a professor of spirituality, and his experience in working with Native Americans, make Dr. Hilliard’s Spirit-Ritual a must read for those who have a passion for the mystery of that which we call spiritual. |
