R.E.M. – Best Of Rem $13.13 This best-of collection features 16 songs from Athens, Georgia, indie rock stars R.E.M. and includes "The One I Love," "Fall On Me," and "Radio Free Europe."This import collection highlights the band`s formative years on the independent IRS label. Though it lacks the alternate mixes that spurred completists to purchase 1988`s Eponymous, this set offers a more detailed picture of the band`s early days, when they sounded more pastoral than pastiche. There is nothing here that can`t be found on the original IRS albums, which are all worth purchasing, but this set is still recommended for casual listeners interested in owning just one R.E.M. disc from this creatively fertile period. ~ Brian Beatty Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. R.E.M. – R.E.M. Live [Digipak] $22.5 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Peter Buck. While the title alone is enough to make any longtime fan salivate–given that this is the first official live release in the Athens band`s formidable catalog–a serious caveat applies. This is not the live companion piece to their other 2007 offering, the excellent and career-defining AND I FEEL FINE…: THE BEST OF THE I.R.S. YEARS 1982-1987, but a document of a single concert performed in the post-Bill Berry year of 2006 at Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. For longtime fans short on live material from the band`s cherry years, this fact is sure to disappoint. The good news, though, is that while the set focuses almost exclusively on the band`s major-label years and features many tracks from their three albums as a trio (UP, REVEAL, and AROUND THE SUN), it still smokes. Peter Buck`s mesmerizing arpeggios set aflame opener "I Took Your Name" from MONSTER and the fan fave "Orange Crush" from GREEN, while Michael Stipe`s undeniable pipes captivate on UP`s gospel-tinged "Walk Unafraid" and the protest song "Final Straw" from AROUND THE SUN. Twice the band dips into I.R.S. territory on a tremolo-soaked "Cuyahoga" and a revved-up "Don`t Go Back to Rockville," in which bassist Mike Mills gets his star turn on lead vocals. The collection also includes a DVD of the entire show, which reveals that although the band was never groomed for stadiums like their `80s counterparts U2, they could still whip a crowd into a frenzy and devastate live–even with a hired gun on the drums. R.E.M. – In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003 $12.89 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Bill Berry.Includes liner notes by Peter Buck.Audio Mixer: Patrick McCarthy.Liner Note Author: Peter Buck.Recording information: John Keane`s Studio, Athens, GA; The Warehouse Studio, Vancouver, British Columbia, Cana.Photographers: Chris Bilheimer; Anton Corbijn. Many of those who revere R.E.M. tend to fixate on the Athens band`s earlier days, when the Byrds-gone-new-wave jangle of Peter Buck`s guitar and the inscrutable murmurs of curly-headed frontman Michael Stipe ruled the college-rock roost and set the standard for what came to be known as "alternative rock." Thus, it`s often overlooked that the band didn`t simply fade away after breaking through to the mainstream in the late-`80s. True to its title, IN TIME: THE BEST OF R.E.M. (1988-2003) chronicles the journey the group made after they became stars.Ever willing and able to defy expectations, R.E.M. steadfastly refused to commercialize their sound or tart it up to fit the arenas that became their venues. IN TIME addresses the prolific 1988-1992 era with everything from the driving fan-favorite "Orange Crush" to the transcendent, tension-filled folk-rocker "Losing My Religion" and the soul-influenced, empathetic anthem "Everybody Hurts." Representing their days after the departure of drummer Bill Berry are songs such as the dusty desert twang of "All the Way to Reno" and the "It`s the End of the World As We Know It" companion piece, "Bad Day." Observing their chosen post-fame path, it`s obvious that long after Stipe had shorn his locks and the music industry made them rich, R.E.M. remained staunchly committed to creating the kind of artful, idiosyncratic music that had made them alt-rock icons in the first place. R.E.M. – Green $7 R.E.M.: Mike Mills (vocals, accordion, bass); Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar, mandolin, drums); Bill Berry (mandolin, drums).Additional personnel: Bucky Baxter (pedal steel guitar); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Keith LeBlanc (percussion). The album that found the band sandwiched between being an important cult band on the verge of major success and being the world`s most successful rock band of the 90s. A tricky situation, but this album made the breakthrough and mighty Warner Brothers were behind it. R.E.M. were able to get their folky mandolin material like `You Are The Everything` accepted on an equal footing with great pop such as `Stand` or `Pop Song 89` (which could have been written by Jim Morrison and titled `Hello I Love You`). `Orange Crush` is already an FM radio favourite, and the rest is all recent history. R.E.M. – Document $8.85 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Mike Mills (bass, keyboards, background vocals); Bill Berry (drums).Additional personnel: Steve Berlin (horns); Carl Marsh (synthesizer).Recorded at Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee.Personnel: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Steve Berlin (horns); Hunt Waugh, Bill Berry (drums).Audio Remasterer: Bob Ludwig.Audio Remixer: Elliot Scheiner.Recording information: Sound Emporium Studios, Nashville, TN; Sound Emporium, Nashville, TN.Photographers: Jim McKey; Paula Court; Sandra Lee Phipps; Michael Meister.R.E.M.`s final album for IRS Records, 1987`s DOCUMENT was the Georgia quartet`s commercial breakthrough. The initial single, the spookily obsessive "The One I Love," was an unexpected Top 10 hit, and its follow-up, the "Subterranean Homesick Blues"-style rant "It`s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," became one of R.E.M.`s most renowned songs. The first R.E.M. album produced by Scott Litt (soon to be a frequent collaborator) DOCUMENT skillfully blends the commercial gloss of LIFE`S RICH PAGEANT and the mysterioso murk of FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION, combining the best elements of both for what would soon become R.E.M.`s signature sound. (Note the thumping rhythm section on the opening "Finest Worksong" and the oddly buoyant melody of "Exhuming McCarthy.") The band even manages to salute one of its favorite predecessors by romping through a loose, fun cover of Wire`s "Strange." Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Tourfilm: R.E.M. $11.36 R.E.M. are one of the major success stories in college rock history. The Athens, Georgia quartet build up a huge fan base on the 1980’s college circuit, and broke through to incredible mainstream success in the early 1990’s. TOURFILM was filmed in 1989, during the band’s GREEN tour. It captures the boys as they are poised to breakthrough to a wider audience, and finds them with a youthful energy and decidedly alternative mindset. Of an excellent set of seventeen songs, “Pop Song 89,” “Stand,” “The One I Love,” and “Finest Worksong” are highlights. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

R.E.M. – Reckoning $9.98 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Mike Mills (vocals, bass); Bill Berry (vocals, drums); Peter Buck (guitar).Recorded at Reflection Sound, Charlotte, North Carolina.Personnel: Bill Berry (vocals, drums, percussion); Michael Stipe, Mike Mills (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar).Audio Mixer: Mitch Easter.Recording information: Reflection Sound Studios, Charlotte, NC.Photographers: Ed Colver; Mike Cameron.Unknown Contributor Role: Howard Finster. The murmuring continued with this, R.E.M.`s second album, recorded in only two weeks, and yet critical acclaim and a growing fanbase had not made the music any less elusive. From the cover depiction of a winding river/snake, the jangly music within was similarly ambiguous, drenched in alternately murky, then dazzlingly clear, images. The water theme predominates throughout side one`s five-song suite, with talk of harbours, oceans and water towers, crowned by the sublime lament of "So. Central Rain." Later, the melancholic eulogy of "Camera" sits comfortably beside the cod-country of "(Don`t Go Back To) Rockville" and the brisk but disillusioned tour around "Little America." An astonishingly assured and uncommercial half-sibling to MURMUR: file under water. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

R.E.M. – Reveal $7.9 R.E.M.: Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stripe.REVEAL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Imitation Of Life" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. While the preceding UP equaled Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, and Peter Buck spending their studio time painstakingly stitching songs together via multiple overdubs, REVEAL finds the Athens trio playing together in the studio along with hired guns Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies), and drummer Joey Waronker (Beck). In bouncing back from drummer Bill Berry`s departure, the group has emerged with a warm-sounding record bubbling over with dreamy pop songs. From the opening number "The Lifting," with its swirling textures, sparse piano, and Stipe`s plainspoken enunciation, R.E.M. serve up heaping dollops of aural manna. Among the many highlights are the throbbing twang-and-strum of "All The Way To Reno (You`re Gonna Be A Star)," which sounds like Mark Knopfler fronting The Flaming Lips, and the faux PET SOUNDS-outtake "Summer Turns To High" with its shimmering keyboards and Stipe`s casual falsetto. Elsewhere, R.E.M. fuse Stax-flavored horns, swooping strings, and a cheap-sounding drum machine for the lighter-than-air "Beachball," and set off on a soaring flight of Rickenbacker guitar jangle soaked in strings and synths on "Imitation Of Life." REVEAL represents R.E.M`s rebirth as a mellifluous pop engine. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

R.E.M. – Up $12.46 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals, guitar); Peter Buck (guitar); Mike Mills (bass). Principally recorded at La Casa Del Elefante, Seattle, Washington; Toast, San Francisco, California; John Keane Studios, Athens, Georgia; Tree Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia.Personnel: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Jun-Ching Lin, Sou-Chun Su, Ellie Arenz, David Arenz, Jay Christy, Willard Shull (violin); Heidi Nitchie, Paul Murphy , Reid Harris, Patti Gouvas (viola); Christopher Rex, Elizabeth Murphy, Daniel Laufer (cello); Douglas Sommer (double bass); Bill Berry, Joey Waronker (drums).Audio Mixers: Suzanne Dyer; John Hanlon; John Keane; Alex Lowe; Nigel Godrich; Patrick McCarthy; R.E.M.Recording information: Baby Monster Studios, New Yor; Case Del Elefante, Seattle, WA; John Keane`s Studio, Athens, GA; Toast, San Francisco, CA.Editors: Craig Silvey; Steve Holsworth.Photographer: Nick Wickham. The departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1997 no doubt unsettled his former R.E.M.-mates, who found themselves straddling not only creative, but personal crossroads. Rather than giving up, the remaining members of R.E.M. reinvented themselves and released UP, a stunning, eloquent album of dark vulnerability and experimentalism. The emotional disquiet Stipe evokes is nearly shocking in its plainspoken lyricism. Songs like the agonized "Sad Professor" and the wary, hypnotic "Suspicion" seem almost too naked for Stipe, who spent years cloaking his words in mumbles and misnomers. For the first time, lyrics are even included in the packaging."Hope" is a breathless, galloping piece of pseudo-electronica that raises the ghost of Leonard Cohen`s "Suzanne" before ending in a heady roar of noise. The gorgeous jangle of "At My Most Beautiful" is pure poetry, an unabashed disclosure of Buck`s giddy reverence for Brian Wilson. Although a drum machine is used at times (Beck drummer Joey Waronker and Tuatara percussionist Barrett Martin also guest on many tracks), an array of disparate sounds, from vibes to violin, infuses the songs with a newfound expressiveness. UP is unlike any other album in the band`s long catalogue–a bold, brilliant spark of musical genius and genuine empathetic revelation. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. R.E.M. – Murmur $9.98 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Peter Buck (guitar); Michael Mills (bass, background vocals); Bill Berry (drums).Additional personnel: Jefferson Holt, Bertis Downs.Recorded at Reflection, Charlotte, North Carolina in January 1983.R.E.M.`s full-length debut is a landmark album that set the standard for the next 10 years of indie rock. The Athens quartet combined Byrdsy, folk-rock guitar jangle with obscurantist lyrics and a post-punk compositional sensibility to create a vibrant new sound that would soon be imitated by every high-school poet with a Rickenbacker guitar. R.E.M. was also one of the first bands to make the long, hard journey from college radio (when it was still college radio) to mainstream acceptance, and managed the difficult task of maintaining its integrity at every step along the way.MURMUR, far from an embryonic debut, shows a fully-formed unit with a strong artistic vision. (It was preceded by two legendary underground releases: The "Radio Free Europe" single–which was re-recorded for MURMUR–and the CHRONIC TOWN EP.) Producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon`s lofty reputations would have remained intact even if they had never worked on another record after this one. The gentle-but-insistent arrangements and glorious pop hooks of songs like "Catapult" and "Talk About The Passion" provide the perfect contrast to Michael Stipe`s earnest, moody vocal style. Drummer Bill Berry`s breathless effervescence provides the perfect backdrop for this album of jumpy, intellectual pop. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Consequently, the album does double duty as a greatest-hits collection and a repository for rarities that didn`t turn up on DEAD LETTER OFFICE. Organized chronologically, EPONYMOUS offers a look at the band`s artistic development, from the Byrdsy jangle of the jumpy "Radio Free Europe" to the more laconic, country-tinged "(Don`t Go Back To) Rockville)." "Can`t Get There From Here" and "Driver 8" are simultaneously more rhythmic and more abstract, while a heavier rock sound is introduced on "The One I Love" and the closing anti-anthem "It`s the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)." EPONYMOUS is an effective overview of the band`s early and middle periods, and a chronicle of a fiercely independent band`s marriage of commercial and artistic success. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. R.E.M. – In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003 [PA] [Limited] $24.43 R.E.M.: Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Bill Berry.Includes liner notes by Peter Buck. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.IN TIME: THE BEST OF R.E.M. 1988-2003 includes a limited editon bonus disc of 15 songs, a booklet with song descriptions, and a black & white mini poster of the band.
