Get Rid Of Acne For Good

Body Works

How many times have you looked at those perfectly sculpted bodies on display and envied them. A lot I think. Anyway, I would not be sarcastic, because I have done so well for countless times. It is not as simple possession of such a lean and fit body. It requires a lot of self-limiting, discipline and motivation. All these factors, decide whether you will look like a sumo wrestler, or a WWE wrestler.

To get a fit body, the first thing you will need to do is get rid of the thick layers of fat that cover your body. You should know that while your muscles are buried under a deep layer of fat, they can not rip out. It is therefore important that you lower the fat of your body to get yourself some muscles rip. Now, it should be mentioned here that there is no such thing as selective reduction of fat, so you can not reduce fat from a certain area, which means that by doing Ab Crunch exercises, you can not reduce the level of fat around your abdomen. You have the total fat content of your body.

When you have made your mind to get slim and fit body, then in that case, you have a professional opinion. Extreme body workout is a place where you can find a lot of professional advice in this regard. Especially surprising is the P90X program. This is a program, which provides you with a work chart to help you lose weight and build more muscle mass. A of the key aspects in terms of weight loss is that the more muscle you build, the more calories you burn, even while not working.

An important aspect of regular work outs is that the body gets used to work out sessions, if you do the same types of exercises. This means you burn fewer calories each time you exercise your Repeat. P90X takes into account this aspect effectively. Over a period of 90 days, 12 introduces the extreme muscle pumpin exercise sessions, which would help you to effectively lose weight. To add the nutrition program that tells you, what food is good for you, and what is bad for you. What foods would fit you, and not for you. It would also tell you how and when you have your meals. All these factors could actually help in losing weight.

Ideal for families, students, and anyone who’s interested in maintaining good health, Body engagingly reveals the complex and fascinating systems of the human machine;from head to toe, cells to skin, inner workings to outward appearance. Organized by body system, the chapters offer a balanced combination of basic anatomical and physiological information. Noted science writers Lisa Stein, Trisha Gura, and Patricia Daniels provide descriptions that are clear, accurate, and accessible to readers on every level. Colorful diagrams, amazing photographs, and miraculous 3- and 4-dimensional imagery;generated by cutting-edge tools;complement the text. The drawings of visionaries such as Leonardo Da Vinci illustrate historic advances in medical science. Special-topic sidebars address today’s most relevant concerns: Keeping Healthy, What Can Go Wrong, Medical Breakthroughs, and more. Fact boxes feature eye-catching items that appeal to readers’ curiosity: how Botox works, what "blue blood" means, why Joe Namath’s knees are famous. For easy reference, each chapter includes its own glossary of terms. Valuable cross-referencing tools guide readers to related information throughout. An appendix offers a full glossary, timeline of medical discoveries, and biographies of key pioneers in the field.Enhancing this book’s authority are a foreword by acclaimed neurologist Richard Restak, bestselling author of 18 books on the brain; and the guidance of advisers from prestigious medical establishments.Comprehensive, reliable, impeccably researched, and a pleasure to read, Body is the essential health resource for every home and library.

This imaginatively conceived activity box teaches children about the human body. It contains components kids can assemble and use to perform simple activities that vividly demonstrate how body organs function. The kit includes plastic models of arteries and veins, replicas of eyeballs, lungs, a brain, and a miniature plastic human skeleton with detachable bones. Also included are a simple funnel, balloons, and other items that boys and girls can use to demonstrate body organs in action. A 32-page, illustrated, easy-to-follow book shows how to perform each activity. For example, to demonstrate how the human heart pumps blood through the body, kids are instructed to fill a balloon with water and attach it to the end of a plastic tube that is also supplied in the kit. Next, kids rhythmically squeeze the balloon to pump the water through the tube, much like the way the heart pumps blood through an artery. Body parts are explained in language understandable to younger children, with descriptions of the lungs, heart, liver, stomach, intestines, brain, blood, muscles, skin, and skeleton.

How the Incredible Human Body Works . . . By the Brainwaves

$15.98

From the same artistic team who gave us How Nearly Everything was Invented, How the Incredible Human Body Works takes readers on a rollicking, rip-roaring romp around the human body. The second book in the Brainwaves series, this quirky yet informative book looks at the body’s physiological processes and its anatomical make-up. Watch the Brainwaves fight with the body’s defense force against invasions from toxic bacteria, dodge squirting digestive juices that can reduce anything to a pulp, or get washed away on a raging red river of blood. The Brainwaves are little people on a big adventure-come join them on their mission of mischievous mayhem. AUTHOR BIO: Richard Walker trained originally as a zoologist. He gained his PhD in physiology and biochemistry, and taught both secondary school and university students for a number of years before embarking on a successful career as a writer and consultant. Among his human biology books for DK are the Guide to the Human Body, 3-D Eyewitness Human Body, Encyclopedia of the Human Body, and Body. Ralph and Lisa established Last Lemon Productions in 1999, which originates, produces, and licenses vibrant and humorous cartoon properties.

This album previously contained the track "Cop Killer", but does not anymore.Body Count: Ice-T (lead vocals), Ernie C. (lead & acoustic guitar), D-Roc (guitar), Mooseman (bass), Beatmaster V (drums). All songs by Ice-T and Ernie C. except "The Winner Loses" and "C Note" (Ernie C.).Recorded at One-on-One Recorders, North Hollywood and Syndicate Studio West, September – December, 1991.Divorced from the controversy that surrounded its release, Body Count`s self-titled debut is a surprisingly tepid affair. Apart from the previously released "Body Count" (which appeared on Ice-T`s 1991 album O.G. Original Gangster), the record is devoid of serious commentary, trading intelligence for a lurid comic book depiction of sex, violence, and "Voodoo." All of Ice-T`s half-sung/half-shouted lyrics fall far short of the standard he established on his hip-hop albums. The controversial "Cop Killer" — which is nothing more than a standard thrash metal chant — stands out because it is one of the few tracks that doesn`t rely on garish, cartoonish imagery. There`s the saga of "Evil Dick," which tells Ice-T to not "sleep alone." There`s "KKK Bitch," where he crashes a Ku Klux Klan meeting and screws the grand dragon`s daughter. There`s "Voodoo," where a witch doctor cripples our hero with a voodoo doll. There`s "Mama`s Gotta Die Tonight," where Ice-T offs his mother cause she`s racist. By the time the band works around to the power ballad "The Winner Loses" and Ice-T is crooning, "My friend`s addicted to cocaine," it`s unclear whether the record is a parody or a flawed stab at arena metal. Either way, Body Count is a humorous curio from the early `90s that will appeal either to metalheads or listeners with a twisted sense of humor. [After "Cop Killer" was pulled from the album, it was replaced with a bland version of Ice-T`s rap classic "The Iceberg" recorded with Jello Biafra.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. "Body is our first environment," writes Andrea Olsen. "It is the medium through which we know the earth." In a remarkable integration of environmental science, biology, meditation, and creative expression, Olsen, a dancer who teaches in the environmental studies program at Middlebury College, offers a guide to a holistic understanding of person and place. Part workbook, part exploration, Body and Earth considers the question of how we can best, most responsibly inhabit both our bodies and our planet.Olsen displays an easy command of fields as diverse as geology, biochemistry, ecology, and anatomy as she explores the ways in which our bodies are derived from and connected to the natural world. But Body and Earth is not just a lesson, it is also an investigation. Arranged as a 31-day program, the book offers not only a wealth of scientific information, but also exercises for both exploring the body and connecting with place; illustrations and works of art that illuminate each chapter’s themes; and Olsen’s own meditations and reflections, connecting the topics to her personal history and experience.Olsen insists that neither body nor landscape are separate from our fundamental selves, but in a culture which views the body as a mechanism to be trained and the landscape as a resource to be exploited, we need to learn to see again their fundamental wholeness and interconnection. Through hard data, reflection, exercises, and inspiration, Body and Earth offers a guide to responsible stewardship of both our planet and our persons.

Uncovering the Body provides a new perspective on how to experience and think about art and the artistic process. It uses the bodily experience as the source and mode of engaging and experiencing work. Our older ways of thinking about art imply the dualities of mind and body, reason and feeling. Author Ed Levine includes chapters on the following subject matter to explain his innovative philosophy: Bodily thoughts and the intelligent flesh Art and ornithology: artist as migratory bird The artistic process Looking into time Western culture is marked by dualities of mind and body, and of body and spirit, which have found their way into our thinking and understanding of art and the artistic process. Thinking and experiencing through and by means of the body can dissolve these dichotomies and provide an alternative way of engaging and finding meaning in works of art. Uncovering the Body provides an alternative to the postmodern interpretation of art. It offers a point of view that moves beyond the limitations that postmodern thinking imposes on our understanding of art and its methods. By reengaging our bodies, we can establish a new relationship between art and ourselves.

The fifth release from Australia’s punk heroes, boasting a dozen crisp and crunchy tracks all supercharged and swept along by the melodies. Life, love, and the pursuit of happiness are the major themes; disaster and despair are the counterpoints. The quartet may not have the answers, but they do have an unerring ability to get to the core of problems and bring them sharply into focus. From drug addiction (”Feed It”) to Columbine (”Falling Down”), breaking up to starting anew, Bodyjar vividly pulls life apart to grapple with the emotions that make lives tick. “Five Minutes Away (When Punk Attack Magicians)” is not an assault on David Copperfield and his ilk, but a seething look at disillusionment, when the platitudes we offer up as comfort become no more than hurtful lies. “Ordinary Lives” is about taking chances, a recurring motif, and how life is chance; How It Works delves into life both good and bad, love and loss, celebrating while still recognizing the inherent dangers. The andrenalized music feeds through the songs with big, thumping beats, guitar riffs shredded by Cameron Baines’ stop-and-go tactics, and the soaring vocals and harmonies that have just a hint of the ’60s about them — Jan & Dean with body piercing and mohawks. It’s a compelling sound that slots nicely into the SoCal scene, but remains uniquely Bodyjar’s own. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide

Body and Story

Body and Story

$29.48

The title Body and Story refers to the division of categories which establishes one axis of this book: that which lies between the world understood in corporeal or material terms and the world understood as text. Richard Terdiman studies this contest between bodies and language–epistemological foundations for the Enlightenment and Postmodernity respectively–through the works of eighteenth-century encyclopedist Denis Diderot and of contemporary philosopher-icon Jacques Derrida. Terdiman argues that despite their very real and irreconcilable opposition, a constant negotiation or mutual interrogation has always taken place between these two domains of theory, even as the balance at times shifts to one side or the other. In analyzing these shifts at the center of the past few centuries’ evolving understanding of human experience, he seeks also to develop a new model for understanding how theories can and do legitimately coexist in our intellectual conception of the world, and to offer a new ethics for managing this coexistence.

The Body Problematic

The Body Problematic

$59.98

Late in life, Foucault identified with "the critical tradition of Kant," encouraging us to read both thinkers in new ways. Grounding modern knowledge in the limits of human reason engendered highly successful forms of political, social-scientific, and medical rationality as well as Kant’s Copernican turn. These limits achieved a concrete, manageable form in historical structures like the asylum, prison, and the sexual or racial human body. Such institutions built upon and shaped the aesthetic judgment of those considered "normal." Following Kant through all of Foucault’s major works, this book shows how bodies functioned as "problematic objects" in which the limits of post-Enlightenment European power and discourse were imaginatively figured and unified. It suggests ways that readers in a neoliberal political order can detach from the imaginative schemes vested in their bodies and experiment normatively with their own security needs.

Rainbow Body

Rainbow Body

$16.98

At first blush, the music of greatest interest on this disc might appear to be Rainbow Body by Christopher Theofanidis and blue cathedral by Jennifer Higdon. Theofanidis demonstrates that orchestration is his strength, and he makes good use of his skills. Yet in spite of the sumptuous sonorities he produces, Theofanidis seems caught up in late-romantic grandiosity. His arching melodies and swelling chords are impressive sounding, but the music is predictable and less than ecstatic at the end. Higdon’s blue cathedral is an atmospheric rhapsody of considerable charm and evocative color. The only thing holding this piece back is its fast middle section, which merely provides contrast. Its headlong charge breaks the delicate ambience Higdon carefully established at the beginning, and ultimately turns the work’s best music into a frame for its rather ordinary material. In the end, Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1, a richly scored work from his youth, and Aaron Copland’s evergreen, Appalachian Spring, are the most satisfying works this disc has to offer. Unfortunately for Theofanidis and Higdon, comparisons inevitably will be drawn, and their pieces may seem poorer next to these accomplished works. Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra turn in sensitive performances, particularly in Appalachian Spring, and Telarc’s recorded sound is vivid. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

The Body in Time

The Body in Time

$19.48

The Body in Time looks at two different genres in relation to the construction of femininity in late nineteenth-century France: Degas’s representation of ballet dancers and the transforming tradition of female portraiture. Class, gender, power, and agency are at stake in both arenas, but they play themselves out in different ways via different pictorial languages. Degas’s depictions of anonymous young female ballerinas at the Paris Opera reflect his fascination with the physical exertions and prosaic setting of the dancer’s sexualized body. Unlike the standard Romantic depictions of the ballerina, Degas’s dancers are anonymous spread-legged workers on public display. Female portraiture and self-portraiture, in contrast, depicted the unique and the distinctive: privileged women, self-assured individuals transgressing gender conventions. Focusing on Degas’s representation of the dancer, Tamar Garb examines the development of Degas’s oeuvre from its early Realist documentary ambitions to the abstracted Symbolist renderings of the feminine as cypher in his later works. She argues that despite the apparent depletion of social significance and specificity, Degas’s later works remain deeply enmeshed in contemporary gendered ways of viewing and experiencing art and life. Garb also looks at the transformation in the genre of portraiture heralded by the "new woman," examining the historical expectations of female portraiture and demonstrating how these expectations are challenged by new notions of female autonomy and interiority. Women artists such as Anna Klumpke, Rosa Bonheur, and Anna Bilinska deployed the language of Realism in their own self-representation. The figure of femininity remained central to the personal, political, and pictorial imperatives of artists across the spectrum of modern aesthetics. Gender and genre intersect throughout this book to show how these categories mutually impact one another.

The Body of Myth

The Body of Myth

$21.48

Long ago the ancestors of the Greeks, Romans, and Hindus were one people living on the Eurasian steppes. At the core of their religion was the "shamanic trance," a natural state but one in which consciousness achieves a profound level of inner awareness. Over the course of millennia, the Indo-Europeans divided and migrated into Europe and the Indian subcontinent. The knowledge of shamanic trance retreated from everyday awareness and was carried on in the form of myths and distilled into spiritual practices–most notably in the Indian tradition of yoga. J. Nigro Sansonese compares the myths of Greece as well as those of the Judeo-Christian tradition with the yogic practices of India and concludes that myths are esoteric descriptions of what occurs within the human body, especially the human nervous system, during trance. In this light, the myths provide a detailed map of the shamanic state of consciousness that is our natural heritage. This book carries on from the works of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell to show how the portrayal of consciousness embodied in myth can be extended to a reappraisal of the laws of physics; before they are descriptions of the world, these laws–like myths–are descriptions of the human nervous system.

The Disappearing Body

The Disappearing Body

$3.98

At once a noir thriller and a literary excursion into urban America between the wars, The Disappearing Body is a tale of drug dealing and union-busting, murder and mayhem on both sides of the law that combines the atmospheric richness of Dashiell Hammett and the irresistible, subversive humor of Thomas Pynchon. When Victor Ribe, an ex-junkie and World War I veteran, is mysteriously released from prison after serving fifteen years for a murder he didn’t commit, the city he returns to is heating up for another kind of war. Prohibition has been repealed and the underworld is developing a new source of profits–illegal heroin trafficking. Meanwhile, the city’s legitimate industries are launching an offensive against unionization and the specter of Communism–and they’re not above fighting dirty. When Victor’s old Army buddy Freddy Stillman, a munitions salesman, reports a murder but can’t explain why the body has disappeared, he unwittingly pulls himself and Victor into this bewildering swirl of corruption. It is a conspiracy that encompasses everyone–from a rising politician who may have just run into the end of his career to a young journalist driven as much by the nonstop energy of the Metro desk as she is by the mystery of her father’s suicide–in the book’s vast, noir cityscape.David Grand, whose first novel, Louse, transformed the last days of Howard Hughes into compelling fiction, works the same dark magic here, weaving suspenseful mystery into his stunning, perversely hilarious portrait of the corruption, ambition, passion, and innocence of post-Prohibition America.

If Light Years was the comeback, and Fever the confirmation, then Body Language can best be described as Kylie’s “big step forward.” Sure it’s still simple dance-pop, but this time she (and a team of producers and writers — including Kurtis Mantronik — it must be said) has put together an album that works as a piece. It’s stylish without being smarmy, retro without being ironic, and its energy never gets annoying. In other words: a near perfect pop record. Instead of opting for more of the light dance- and disco-pop of the last two releases, Kylie has sought to expand her horizons. Adding elements of electroclash, ’80s synth pop, bouncy club beats — even a dash of Eminem-style raps! — she’s found the formula that not only makes her vocal shortcomings irrelevant but gives her the edge on the rest of the divas on their newfound quest: maturity. While Madonna, Xtina, and Britney have attempted to achieve maturity through trashiness and not really all that shocking behavior (i.e., that MTV Awards kiss), Kylie maintained a low profile, retained a sense of class, and put together what may well be the best album of her career. Simply, Body Language is what happens when a dance-pop diva takes the high road and focuses on what’s important instead of trying to shock herself into continued relevance. ~ Chris True, All Music GuidePerformers: Gavyn Wright – Lead; Dave Billing – Vocals (Background); Chris Braide – Vocals (Background); Cathy Dennis – Vocals (Background); Miriam Grey – Vocals (Background); London Session Orchestra – Strings; Kylie Minogue – Vocals (Background); Karen Ann Poole – Vocals (Background); Alexis Strum – Vocals (Background); Anisha Thomas – Choir, Chorus, Vocals (Background); Dave Clews – Keyboards;

The Body in Asia (Hardcover)

The Body in Asia (Hardcover)

$111.85

The past few decades have seen growing interest in the study of the body, not least thanks to Michel Foucault`s historical studies of medicine in the 1970s, which inspired the initial development of the contemporary study of the human body. However, the increasing number of exciting and influential publications has primarily, if not exclusively, focused on the body in Western cultures. The various works produced by Asian scholars remain largely unknown to Western academic debates even though Asia is home to a host of rich body cultures and religions. The peoples of Asia have experienced colonization, decolonization, and now globalization, all of which make the "body in Asia" a rewarding field of research. This volume is unique, as it brings together into a single volume a number of scholars who work on East, Southeast and South Asia and presents original and cutting-edge research on the body in various Asian cultures.

Boccherini's Body

Boccherini’s Body

$44.98

In this elegant study of the works of the undeservedly neglected composer Luigi Boccherini, Elisabeth Le Guin uses knowledge gleaned from her own playing of the cello as the keystone of her original approach to the relationship between music and embodiment. In analyzing the striking qualities of Boccherini’s music–its virtuosity, repetitiveness, obsessively nuanced dynamics, delicate sonorities, and rich palette of melancholy affects–Le Guin develops a historicized critical method based on the embodied experience of the performer. In the process, she redefines the temperament of the musical Enlightenment as one characterized by urgent, volatile inquiries into the nature of the self. A CD of sound examples, performed by the author and her string quartet, is included with the book.

Body Knowledge and Curriculum

Body Knowledge and Curriculum

$37.48

Body Knowledge and Curriculum examines student understandings of body knowledge in the context of creating and interrogating visual art and culture. It illustrates a six-month research study conducted in an alternative secondary school in a large urban city. During the research project, students created a number of visual art works using a diversity of material explorations as a means to think through the body as a process of exchange and as a bodied encounter. The book engages with feminist theories of touch and inter-embodiment, questioning the materiality and lived experiences of the body in knowledge production, in order to provoke different ways of theorizing self/other relations in teaching and learning. This volume is important because it explores the ways in which youth understand the complex, textured, and often contradictory discourses of body knowledge, and seeks to intentionally create alternative pedagogical and curricular practices to ones that subscribe to a healthy body model. Additionally, enacting educational research as living inquiry, this book is an exemplar of the arts-based methodology, a/r/tography. Body Knowledge and Curriculum is a valuable text for courses in curriculum theory, art education, qualitative research methodologies, visual culture and pedagogies, and feminist theory. Appropriate for advanced undergraduate students, pre-service teacher education students, and graduate students, the book provides an interdisciplinary investigation into body research.

Human Body Systems

Human Body Systems

$455.48

The human body is made up of systems of organs, which, when working properly, allow people to go through their daily tasks without a second thought. When the system, or one of its organs, malfunctions, doctors must work with patients to determine optimal treatments to restore organ function and health. Researchers are developing new and improved treatments all the time. This ten-volume set looks at each of the human body’s systems in detail. At the beginning of each volume, the author introduces the system and its component parts, explaining how each works and its importance to health. Common malfunctions and diseases of the system are also presented, along with typical tests and treatments. Next, a history of the study of this system traces important discoveries about this body system, and identifies the doctors, scientists, and researchers who made these discoveries. Finally, each volume ends with a discussion about the future of the body system–what researchers are still trying to learn about how the system works, and potential new therapies to solve as-yet-untreatable diseases and injuries. Fascinating facts about each body system, and a list of resources for further information, will help both students and patients locate all they need to know about the body system they are researching.

The Body in Hollywood Slapstick

The Body in Hollywood Slapstick

$39.48

Because they rely heavily on physical comedy, many Hollywood slapstick films can be understood as comic meditations on the place and nature of the human body. Focusing on the works of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Laurel and Hardy, among others, this book examines ways that the body represents or interacts with the mind, setting, voice and machines in slapstick films. Also covered are female performances in slapstick and brutality and suffering in the slapstick tradition.

The Body Acoustic

The Body Acoustic

$16.98

The brainchild of David Chesky, this album’s collective talents rise to the fore early and often. Although “52nd Street” takes a moment or two to find its niche, Randy Brecker’s trumpet recalls Miles Davis backed by a Latin or salsa flavor thanks to the conga playing from Giovanni Hidalgo. The fluidity is its crowning glory, as Bob Mintzer joins the fray on bass clarinet, giving it a low yet sophisticated style. The low-key atmosphere only adds to the luster of the opening song, although Brecker’s solo two-thirds of the way in isn’t entirely outstanding, sliding up and down the scales with average results. However, the polyrhythmic verve oozing on the catchy and infectious “East Harlem” works brilliantly, while Chesky jumps off into a rapid yet meticulous piano solo prior to Brecker taming the number down. “Bronxville” ensues, but by this time the listener senses this is basically a 70-minute song divided into nine sonic boroughs, as some of the early song titles would suggest. This particular effort is given more air to breathe and thrive upon, with the bassline having more of an integral role. The group changes gears slightly on the funkier and deliberate “Hell’s Kitchen,” bringing to mind instrumentals by Morphine as the song is wrapped tightly around the anchor of its rhythm section before slowing to a crawl. “Acoustic Metal” gets things back to a lovely and polished framework as Brecker takes the song by its proverbial horns, while Chesky accents the core of the effort. But “N.Y. Cool” might be too cool for its own good, wallowing in certain areas while shining in other instances, albeit fleetingly. One noticeable difference is the closing “Club Descarga,” hinting at a sense of urgency and fine musicianship. ~ Jason MacNeil, All Music GuidePerformers: Giovanni Hidalgo – Conga; Bob Mintzer – Clarinet (Bass); Randy Brecker – Trumpet; David Chesky – Piano; Andy González – Bass, Double Bass

John Donne, Body and Soul

John Donne, Body and Soul

$28.98

John Donne, one of the most brilliant poets and preachers of the English Renaissance, lived a life full of dramatic changes of fortune, and his writing reflects his wide range of experiences. His collected works vary from passionate love poems to devotional sonnets, from quiet meditations to caustic satires, and from decorous elegies to thundering sermons. For centuries readers have struggled to fuse the seemingly scattered pieces of Donne’s life into a complete image of the poet and priest that does not depend on a radical division between the two. In John Donne, Body and Soul, Ramie Targoff offers a way to read Donne as a writer who returned again and again to a single great subject, one that connected to his deepest intellectual and emotional concerns. Reappraising Donne’s entire oeuvre in pursuit of the struggles and commitments that connect his most disparate works, Targoff convincingly shows that Donne believed throughout his life in the mutual necessity of body and soul. Any experience, whether it be illness, sex, or reading a book, that ignored either its spiritual or physical component was for Donne inevitably incomplete or unsatisfying. In chapters that range from his earliest letters to his final sermon, Targoff reveals that Donne’s obsessive imagining of both the natural union and the inevitable division between body and soul is the most continuous and abiding subject of his writing.

Eustace Chisholm and the Works

Eustace Chisholm and the Works

$13.48

A literary cult hero of major proportions, James Purdy’s exquisitely surreal fiction—Tennessee Williams meets William S. Burroughs—has been populated for more than forty years by social outcasts living in crisis and longing for love. His acclaimed first novel, Malcolm (1959), won praise from writers as diverse as Dame Edith Sitwell, Dorothy Parker, and Gore Vidal, while his later works, from the award-winning In a Shallow Grave (1976) to Gertrude of Stony Island Avenue (1998), influenced new generations of authors. Eustace Chisholm and the Works, a 1967 novel that became a gay classic, is an especially outspoken book among the author’s controversial body of work. Purdy recalls that Eustace Chisholm and the Works—named one of the Publishing Triangle’s 100 Best Lesbian and Gay Novels of the 20th Century—outraged the New York literary establishment. More than breaking out of the pre-Stonewall closet, however, the book liberated its author and readers can be grateful for that.

How can America’s information technology (IT) industry predict serious labor shortages while at the same time laying off tens of thousands of employees annually? The answer is the industry’s flexible labor management system–a flexibility widely regarded as the modus operandi of global capitalism today. Global "Body Shopping" explores how flexibility and uncertainty in the IT labor market are constructed and sustained through concrete human actions. Drawing on in-depth field research in southern India and in Australia, and folding an ethnography into a political economy examination, Xiang Biao offers a richly detailed analysis of the India-based global labor management practice known as "body shopping." In this practice, a group of consultants–body shops–in different countries works together to recruit IT workers. Body shops then farm out workers to clients as project-based labor; and upon a project’s completion they either place the workers with a different client or "bench" them to await the next placement. Thus, labor is managed globally to serve volatile capital movement.Underpinning this practice are unequal socioeconomic relations on multiple levels. While wealth in the New Economy is created in an increasingly abstract manner, everyday realities–stock markets in New York, benched IT workers in Sydney, dowries in Hyderabad, and women and children in Indian villages–sustain this flexibility.

Collected Works of Jaroslav Hájek

Collected Works of Jaroslav Hájek

$261.48

"Hájek was undoubtedly a statistician of enormous power who, in his relatively short life, contributed fundamental results over a wide range of topics…" V. Barnett, University of Nottingham. Hájek’s writings in statistics are not only seminal but form a powerful unified body of theory. This is particularly the case with his studies of non-parametric statistics. His book "The Theory of Rank Test", with ?idák, was described by W. Hoeffding as almost the last word on the subject. Hájek’s work still has great importance today, for example his research has proved highly relevant to recent investigations on bootstrap diagnostics. Much of Hájek’s work is scattered through the literature and some of it quite inaccessible, existing only in the original Czech version. This book provides a valuable unified text of the collective works of Hájek with additional essays by internationally renowned contributors. Undoubtedly this book will be essential reading to modern researchers in nonparametric statistics.

Body Against Soul (Hardcover)

Body Against Soul (Hardcover)

$56.33

In medieval allegory, Body and Soul were often pitted against one another in debate. In Body Against Soul: Gender and Sowlehelein Middle English Allegory, Masha Raskolnikov argues that such debates function as a mode of thinking about psychology, gender, and power in the Middle Ages. Neither theological nor medical in nature, works of sowlehele (“soul-heal”) described the self to itself in everyday language—moderns might call this kind of writing “self-help.” Bringing together contemporary feminist and queer theory along with medieval psychological thought, Body Against Soul examines Piers Plowman, the “Katherine Group,” and the history of psychological allegory and debate. In so doing, it rewrites the history of the Body to include its recently neglected fellow, the Soul. The topic of this book is one that runs through all of Western history and remains of primary interest to modern theorists—how “my” body relates to “me.” In the allegorical tradition traced by this study, a male person could imagine himself as a being populated by female personifications, because Latin and Romance languages tended to gender abstract nouns as female. However, since Middle English had ceased to inflect abstract nouns as male or female, writers were free to gender abstractions like “Will” or “Reason” any way they liked. This permitted some psychological allegories to avoid the representational tension caused by placing a female soul inside a male body, instead creating surprisingly queer same-sex inner worlds. The didactic intent driving sowlehele is, it turns out, complicated by the erotics of the struggle to establish a hierarchy of the self’s inner powers.

The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution

The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution

$3.48

The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution is the first book to show how stress, depression, and anger affect blood sugar. It’s also the first to provide a proven, step-by-step health program to help the millions of people with diabetes manage their disease. Until now, this life-changing program was available only to patients at Duke University Medical Center, but The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution makes it available to everyone who needs it — diabetic people and the millions at risk for developing the disease. Over the past forty years, little has changed in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Diet, exercise, and medication are still the three primary methods used to control blood sugar. Yet diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions not just in the United States, but also in other countries all over the world. Now, after twenty years of research, Dr. Richard S. Surwit — a leader in the field of the psychology of diabetes — adds the vital fourth component to treating diabetes: a revolutionary mind-body program that lowers blood sugar levels and dramatically reduces the disease’s serious, damaging side effects, which can include painful nerve damage, heart disease, impotence, eye problems, and kidney ailments. The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution explains how thoughts and beliefs influence a person’s emotions and moods and shows how these can translate into chronic anger, cynicism, anxiety, and depression — all of which increase your blood sugar level. But, with compelling case studies and a powerfully effective step-by-step six-week program, Dr. Surwit demonstrates how you can learn to manage the emotions and stress that lead to elevated hormones and higher blood sugar levels. After he explains the mind-metabolism connection so that you see how it works in your own body, Dr. Surwit provides self-tests and reflective quizzes to test your personality type and decide on the best — and easiest — psychological techniques to help you lower your blood sugar level, and keep it low. Then he helps you develop the best long-term mind-body program for your needs and shows how to use the planner to keep track of your progress. An invaluable aid to your overall well-being, The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution helps you enlist your own mind and body as powerful allies in controlling your diabetes, and enjoy greater general health as a result.

Understanding the Messages of Your Body

Understanding the Messages of Your Body

$15.48

Fears, anxieties, traumas, and physical and emotional shocks imprint on the body and remain dormant in its vast memory store until they are roused by an event or encounter. They may manifest in a different form or place—a fearful incident may transform itself into a stomachache or a headache, or even a chronic disease. Pain creates its own path. In particular, psychological and emotional stresses affect the functioning of the internal organs. In Understanding the Messages of Your Body, Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral explains the relationships that exist between internal organs and emotions, to allow us to free ourselves from the effects of present and past tensions and traumas. The book opens with an explanation of the body-mind relationship and goes on to show how physical-emotional therapy works based on examples from Dr. Barral’s clinical practice. The second part of the book offers detailed analyses of various “types” of human personality and the physical-emotional complexes and related organ dysfunctions that accompany them. The author offers advice and encouragement to improve physical, psychological, and emotional health, and recommends physical exercises, psychotherapeutic approaches, and dietary plans that can be used by both professional therapists and the average reader.

The Resurrection of the Body (Hardcover)

The Resurrection of the Body (Hardcover)

$55.79

Italian novelist, poet, and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini was brutally killed in Rome in 1975, a macabre end to a career that often explored humanity`s capacity for violence and cruelty. Along with the mystery of his murderer`s identity, Pasolini left behind a controversial but acclaimed oeuvre as well as a final quartet of beguiling projects that signaled a radical change in his aesthetics and view of reality. The Resurrection of the Body is an original and compelling interpretation of these final works: the screenplay Saint Paul, the scenario for Porn-Theo-Colossal, the immense and unfinished novel Petrolio, and his notorious final film, Sal¿ or the 120 Days of Sodom, a disturbing adaptation of the writings of the Marquis de Sade. Together these works, Armando Maggi contends, reveal Pasolini`s obsession with sodomy and its role within his apocalyptic view of Western society. One of the first studies to explore the ramifications of Pasolini`s homosexuality, The Resurrection of the Body also breaks new ground by putting his work into fruitful conversation with an array of other thinkers such as Freud, Strindberg, Swift, Henri Michaux, and Norman O. Brown.
