What turtles eat? It depends on the nature of the turtles, how old they are and where they are. Generally, turtles are carnivores when they are young. However, turning they are omnivores or herbivores when they grow up and mature, depending on their type.
To answer the question "What turtles eat?" We begin with a list of the species and turtles eat what they want:
o Although River Cooter turtles feed primarily on plants, map turtles and Malayan Box turtles eat much meat and plants.
o American Box turtles feed on anything it is.
o meat diet is the principle of the Chinese 3-Striped Box turtles.
o Red-eared slider turtles eventually an omnivorous to maturity after starting off eating insects and worms when they are young.
o snapping turtles looking for small creatures to eat, while most other turtles eat only plants.
o Most turtles eat crustaceans, insects, aquatic plants or fish.
o To ward off predators, turtles often eat poisonous plants such as rhubarb poisonous, ivy and avocado found near their habitat.
o Pond Turtles in the U.S. food from a large list consists of insects, arthropods, small crustaceans, snails, worms and small fish.
o Poisonous plants should not be in the diet of a pet turtle owner not what they were domesticated plants in their natural environment to learn.
o What should pet turtle food is good and healthy food. If you purchased a pet turtle, they probably sell the foods that turtles eat.
o water turtles eat aquatic aquarium plants, small living fish, dried shrimp and turtle floating pellets can be found on the pet.
o Land turtles eat special pellets made for turtles. While some worms eat, others eat fruit, vegetables, and meal worms.
o processed foods with a high content of salt and preservatives are at risk of damaging the digestive system of the turtle.
o milk or milk products can make sick and should be avoided entirely if their stomachs lack the enzyme for breaking down lactose.
o Turtles sometimes eat fruits such as bananas, grapes, mangoes, blueberries, apples, strawberries and citrus.
o Turtles can also eat chicken, turkey, fish cooked in small quantities, mealworms, boiled eggs, worms, silk worms, shrimps, snails and crickets. Raw meat with too much fat can get contaminated and
should be avoided.
o Domestic turtles eat green vegetables such as carrot tops, fig leaves, red and green lettuce, corn, green beans and peas, beets, squash, okra and plantain weed.
o Turtles also love to eat flowers such as roses, pansies, petunias, borage, geraniums, carnations, nasturtiums and hyssop.
o Phosphorus is the kind of food preferred by the tortoise, but you must take precautions and watch out for minerals such as calcium intake and vitamin D3 in the diet of the turtle as a direct impact on health. Vitamin D3 can be given as a nutritional supplement if your turtle lacking the vitamin. Exposure to sunlight or light reptile also helps in the production in the body of the turtle.

From a Raw Deal to a New Deal $6.48 Bank closings, soup kitchens, bread lines, unemployed workers begging for work–these images defined the 1930s and ’40s in America. For African Americans the era was a study in contrasts: black workers had the highest unemployment rate at a time when black leaders held important positions in Franklin Roosevelt’s administration; New Deal legislation threw hundreds of thousands of black sharecroppers off the land while the same federal government provided unprecedented opportunities for black writers and artists; dramatic episodes of racist violence against African Americans occurred just as Communists and other radicals launched a nationwide campaign against racial injustice. When the United States entered World War II in 1941, the horrors of war provided an opportunity for blacks to demand equal treatment. As the African American servicemen, such as the all-black 99th fighter squadron (also known as the "Tuskegee Airmen"), fought for democracy overseas, black people at home were treated like second-class citizens. The war also created employment opportunities for many black working people. But few managed to get industrial jobs or into training programs, and those who did were likely to experience violent reprisals from disgruntled white workers. While U.S. troops invaded Normandy and bombed Okinawa, African Americans fought their own war at home. From a Raw Deal to a New Deal examines the impact of the depression and the war on black communities. The response of workers, farmers, activists, and the federal government, the inspiring cultural and intellectual achievements of such leading African Americans as Marcus Garvey, W. E. B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, and Marian Anderson, and the role that war-time industrialization and recovery played in black protest movements paved the way for the modern civil rights movement. This is fascinating and relevant history for today’s young people. |

Fire in My Bones: Raw Rare + Otherworldly African-American Gospel (1944-200 $25.98 Fire in My Bones is an absolutely magnificent gospel music collection. Not because its quality is consistently high — it isn’t — but precisely because everything about it is so delightfully all-over-the-place. If your experience with African-American gospel music has been mainly limited to incidental encounters with the Golden Gate Quartet or Mahalia Jackson, then prepare to be startled: on this sprawling three-disc set, which covers more than 60 years of mostly obscure gospel recordings, you’ll hear the deeply spooky “Wasn’t That a Mystery” (performed by the Madison County Senior Center Singers), the even spookier “Get Back Satan” (by Rev. Roger L. Worthy and his sister Bonnie Woodstock), the heartrendingly beautiful “Does Jesus Care” (by Marie Knight), and the irresistibly funky “Help Me” (by Lula Collins). In a few instances the sound quality is poor enough to be a barrier to enjoyment of the music, but in most cases where the recording is particularly ragged, it only adds to the music’s often otherworldly beauty. A few tracks, such as the Rev. Utah Smith’s “God’s Mighty Hand” and the jaw-dropping “Prayer (Excerpt)/I Love the Lord,” blur the distinction between sermon and song — on the latter track, the congregation’s singing rises and falls like an enormous whale coming to the surface. A few of these tracks really are clunkers, but frankly, even those come as something of a relief, giving your ears and heart a moment of rest before being lifted inexorably up again. Fantastic. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide |

Raw $9.98 Chris Murray’s albums are turning into an exercise in frustration. Not because the material isn’t great — in fact, it’s amazingly consistent in its very high quality. Murray has an incredible ability to write ska, reggae, and rocksteady songs that sound like they bubbled up from the steaming streets of 1960s Jamaica, and he sings them in a wonderfully rich and confident voice. The problem is that his solo albums have all followed in the lo-fi footsteps of Four-Track Adventures of Venice Shoreline Chris, his solo debut (which consisted entirely of homemade demos recorded on a crappy four-track cassette recorder). This means that Murray’s brilliant songs and great voice are all but buried under background noise, tape hiss, and microphone distortion. Raw takes that practice to its logical conclusion, and actually consists of tracks recorded on a handheld Walkman. Yet the album is so filled with irresistible musical pleasures that there’s simply no way to give it anything less than a rating of “excellent.” From the melancholy bounce of “Home” (”I want to go home, but home has gone away”) to the live rendition of “Rock Steady” (previously recorded on Four-Track Adventures) that closes the album, Murray’s melodic gift will have the most snobbish audiophile nodding and foot-tapping along. And hoping that someday he’ll see his way clear to giving these songs the full-band arrangements and production quality they deserve. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Ian Ashley – Vocals (Background); Deston Berry – Vocals (Background); Bison – Vocals (Background); Alex Desert – Vocals (Background); Neville Staple – Vocals |

Raw $15.98 Synapse is a collaboration featuring Haco and Ikue Mori along with multi-instrumentalist Aki Onda and special guest Uchihashi Kazuhisa (Ground Zero, Altered States). Anyone familiar with any of these players knows that they are uncompromising, idiosyncratic musicians, to say the least. Tzadik calls this “experimental pop.” Just plain “experimental” is probably closer to the truth, because the only real similarity to just about anyone’s concept of “pop music” is that it consists of elements that could be called “vocals” and “music.” Haco is a delight, as always, singsonging lyrics mostly in Japanese, but peppered lightly with some English (Mary Poppins gets name-dropped in “Morning Song”). The music consists mostly of weird electronics and sampling swirling around Haco’s lyrics. With Mori contributing electronics, Onda adding more electronics along with sampler and cassette player, and Haco adding some synth, it gets pretty difficult to tell who’s doing what and what the sources are (even Kazuhisa’s “guitar playing” is sometimes difficult to pick out). Fans of Haco should be pleased; she assumes a de facto leadership role, having written all the lyrics, and is the only consistently identifiable musician. People into avant-garde electronics might also be interested, but this is challenging stuff to be sure and for people with the most open ears. However, listeners attracted to Tzadik releases tend to know what they could be in for. ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music GuidePerformers: Haco – Bird Calls, Percussion, Synthesizer, Vocals; Uchihashi Kazuhisa – Daxophone, Guitar; Ikue Mori – Electronics; Aki Onda – Electronics, Sampling; Kazuhisa Uchihashi – Guitar |

Various Artists – African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds From Benin & Togo 70s [Slipcase] $24.32 The subtitle here, intriguing as it is, isn`t completely accurate, since the emphasis is actually more on soul and funk than raw garage rock and psychedelia. Indeed, there`s a strongJames Brown fixation for many artists here, and Roger Damawuzen should have won an award (or a lawsuit) for his uncanny imitation of the Godfather of Soul. It does get a little wild at times, as with "Congolaise Benin Ye" from Le Super Borgou de Parakou, but one thing that never falters here is the groove. Once a band latches onto it, they don`t let go, keeping it rock-solid, but with plenty of polyrhythms happening as part of it, giving it a wonderful, flexible feeling. There`s no a bad cut here, and it`s obvious that this is the result of a labor of love — the result of two-and-a-half years work and nine trips to the countries. It may be the Francophone influence that steers the musicians away from the more obvious English and American rock sounds, although you can definitely hear the Afro-Latin percussion of Santana in the mix (and the fiery guitar work, too, at times). But whatever the artists are doing, they thankfully never try to ditch their Afro roots — which, of course, are the bedrock of soul and rock. This all takes it in another, fabulous direction. In many ways it proved to be a bit of a dead end historically, but the music that came out of it is nothing less than sublime. And keep the player going after the last track for the hidden bonus. It`s worthwhile. ~ Chris Nickson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Various Artists – African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds From Benin & Togo 70s [Slipcase] $31.27 The subtitle here, intriguing as it is, isn`t completely accurate, since the emphasis is actually more on soul and funk than raw garage rock and psychedelia. Surfaces: Color, Substances, and Ritual Applications on African Sculpt $75 Explores the power and potency of surfaces in African sculpturepEvery piece of African woodcarving has an embellished surface, whether it is dyed, pigmented, refurbished, or encrusted with sacrificial matter. Surfaces is the first book to present a detailed study of what happens to African wood sculpture from its creation to its ritual use and retirement. The six essays by distinguished African art historians investigate cultural practices associated with surface decoration, the practitioners responsible for the applications, and the reasons for the use of specific materials. Luxurious color and black-and-white photographs embellish the text and illustrate the power and potency of African sculpture. A comprehensive listing of colorings and raw materials is also included. For students, museum professionals, and collectors, this book will become an important reference which inspires new appreciations of African art and artistry. |
